About the Anakiwa Bay Water Supply Society

The Anakiwa Bay Water Supply Society is one of two water schemes serving the bayside community of Anakiwa (see map) in New Zealand's Marlborough Sounds. Established over 25 years ago and community maintained, the scheme draws water from a stream in the hills behind ‘The Oaks’ farm and distributes it to thirty frontage sections extending from the Outward Bound boathouse to Boundary Gate corner. The scheme has proved extremally reliable over the years and has resource consent from the Marlborough District Council to draw up to 60 cubic metres of water per day although actual usage has generally averaged less than half that amount.

Owners of any of the served sections are entitled to membership in the Association and a single vote at the Society's Annual General Meeting (AGM) which is generally held over the Easter weekend. Maintenance and upgrades are paid for by annual subscriptions which are reviewed annually at the AGM.

The resulting pressure drop prevented water reaching those houses up the hill from the Gasteiger property. Once the fault was located, repairs were made and the pressure returned to normal. The heavy rains also resulted in the intake being ‘graveled’ over twice requiring cleanup and replacing of stone leading into the intake.
